For those of you that haven’t heard, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have been in a blackout since Sunday afternoon. We had a wonderful time experiencing 60-70 mph gusts from hurricane Ike which caused trees to come down around the city…and in turn, power lines. A block from our apartment a limb fell onto a line creating a loud explosion and igniting some tree limbs. We lost all power shortly afterward. As of this morning, the power line was still lying in the street and may not be repaired anytime soon. We were amongst 800,000 people who lost electricity. There’s also a shortage of contractors for the energy company because they were released to go down to Texas and help out after the hurricane. They’re talking like it could be Saturday before all power is restored. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long.
In the meantime, we’ve been using our trusty Coleman lantern and Maglite to maneuver around in the dark. Our fridge/freezer has been condensed down into an ice chest, but we’ll still end up throwing out a lot of food. There’s not much to do when there’s no tv, cable, or even lights to read. We have stayed entertained by watching DVD’s on our computers, but that gets old after a while. Oh yeah, and we lost hot water as of this morning! It just gets better. Thankfully, the weather is in the mid-70’s so the lack of AC isn’t an issue…yet.
One blessing is that Emily and I were able to come into my office last night and charge our phones, computers, and watch a little tv. The university has its own power plant and never lost power. Keep your fingers crossed for us. We’ll keep you updated. For those of you that have electricity, enjoy it!
UPDATE: AFTER 54 HOURS, WE HAVE POWER! NOW FOR THE FUN GAME OF “DO YOU THINK THIS IS STILL GOOD?” WITH THE CONTENTS OF OUR REFRIGERATOR.
