A glimpse into our crazy life

Before & After: The fireplace room August 24, 2010

The first room we tackled on the first floor was the “fireplace room” because we can’t decide on a better name for it. We had been using it as our living room/tv room since we were avoiding those rooms carpeted in teal. It features a beautiful wood-paneled fireplace- one of the features that sold us on the house- and the windows look out onto our new patio. These before pictures from our walk-through of the house just before we bought it shows it was pretty blah, aside from the fireplace.

We went with a nice earthy green, which was originally suggested by my mom (thanks, mom! it’s still my favorite paint color out of the whole house!) and it’s the first time we used low-VOC paint. That stuff is amazing! We’ve been using Olympic’s low-VOC paint ever since and you can usually get good deals on it at Lowe’s.

Here are some after shots. The room is a little lonely now that we watch tv in a different room, but we look forward to building our first fires in it this winter with the firewood from the tree we chopped down during the backyard renovations. I have fabric to make roman shades for the windows, but haven’t gotten around to sewing them since the fabric arrived right around the time the morning sickness was setting in!

Much more homey, don’t you think? Well, that was one room down, 4 more to go!

A work in progress

Since January, we worked very hard to update the first floor of the house before we hosted the end of the year party for Frank’s students and colleagues. Since I found out I was pregnant back in January, I was relegated to primarily prep and clean-up work, while poor Frank had to do all the painting by himself. I’d been holding out on posting any pictures on the blog of our changes because I wanted to wait until we had decorations on the walls. Alas, it’s been a couple of months since Frank finished painting and our walls are still pretty bare; and I’d like to get these pictures up before baby madness sets in. So, I’ll be posting “before” and “after” pics of the rooms, but I certainly don’t consider the rooms “finished”. After all, creating a home, not just a house, is a work in progress, right?

The view from our kitchen window… August 12, 2010

While chopping several pounds of home-grown tomatoes on a recent Sunday, this was the view out the window- gladiolus bulbs blooming, Mya keeping watch over her domain, and Frank picking more tomatoes from our garden.

32 Weeks August 6, 2010

No, these aren’t some toddler’s chubby ankles. These are the cankles of a 32-weeks pregnant lady who has been suffering through this long, hot summer- including a heat index of 100+ this week- and can only fit into her flip-flops. Sigh.
