About 2-3 weeks ago, Alaina developed her “social smile”. Things have been so much more fun now that she’ll smile back at us! We’ve had a few really rough days the past few weeks (it seems she unfortunately inherited my finicky stomach and reflux), but all that frustration melts away when she smiles at you. It’s been tricky to get a good picture since she moves around so much, so here are some of my attempts to capture her adorable grin…
Book Review: 100 Prayers God Loves to Hear, 100 Praise Songs November 8, 2010
Now that I have a kid, I get to review children’s books, too! First up: 100 Prayers God Loves to Hear, which also comes with 2 CD’s of 100 Praise Songs that correspond with the book, which I received through Booksneeze’s book review program. The prayers in this book range from those taken from Scripture and well-known prayers (like “The Serenity Prayer) to new ones. It includes prayers for the numerous different situations your children experience, such as different times of day or year. For each prayer, the book provides some context for why it may be used, how you can apply the message to your own life, some food for thought, and which song corresponds to it. I love the variety among the types of prayers and the suggestions for application so your kids can see how they can apply it to their own lives. I must say I enjoy the book more the CD, whose songs are pretty cheesy, although there is a nice variety to the song styles. Overall, it’s a great introduction for your kids to prayer and its use in our lives, and I look forward to reading to my new little one!
BFFs November 3, 2010
We weren’t really sure how Mya was going to react to becoming a big sister. After adopting her, we had discovered her prior owners had barely socialized her and thus, she was scared of everything- strangers, loud noises, even doors. While she’s made a lot of progress with her behavior, you still never know how they’re going to react to such a big change. We tried to prepare her as much as possible by reviewing her obedience training, getting her used to all the new baby gear (like swings that move and make music), praising her whenever she was calm around kids, etc.
It turns out that Mya is a great big sister! She was extremely attentive when we first brought Alaina home- getting up and checking on her with every noise she made. She got as little sleep as we did those first few nights since she always wanted to know what was going on. Mya isn’t quite so hypervigilant anymore, but she often comes over when Alaina is crying and licks her hands and feet to console her. And she often investigates the many smells involved in having a newborn. :) They’ve really done great together and we hope Mya continues to take everything in stride, especially once Alaina starts grabbing things and crawling!
At her checkup on Monday, she was up to 11 lbs 8 oz and 22.25 inches, putting her in the 95th percentile for both weight and length. She’s already outgrowing some of her 0-3 month clothes because she’s too long for them! As you can see, she loves to stretch out now. She’s becoming much more vocal with grunts and coos, and we’ve even gotten a few genuine smiles from her! She’s had a fun first month of life. Here are some of the highlights:
-Visits from Aunt Stephanie, Aunt Heather, and Grandma Doris.
-Going to her first athletic event- a volleyball game.
-Getting out of the house every day with mom- to the store, to the mall, going on walks, etc. She even helped me vote yesterday!
-Her first holiday- Halloween- although she slept through almost all of the trick-or-treaters.
-Helping mom and dad become expert multi-taskers, like petting Mya while cuddling with Alaina.
-Making us laugh every day with some new goofy thing that she’ll do.
While it’s been exhausting, we’ve definitely loved our first month with our beautiful baby girl!!
