A glimpse into our crazy life

Alaina’s 9th Month June 29, 2011

Our little baby is 9 months old! She moves non-stop these days, making it rather difficult to get her to lay next to her bear long enough for a photo. She weighs 19 lbs 14 oz (75th percentile) and is 27.25 inches long (50th percentile); she’s a little chubby for her length but is otherwise healthy. Here’s what she’s been up to this month:

-Her two top teeth are coming in, making her more grumpy the past couple of weeks and she’s had some difficulty sleeping.

-She learned how to go from lying down to sitting and back again.

-We started her on finger foods this month. She’s gotten the hang of feeding herself dry food like puffs and Cheerios, but has a hard time with the slippery stuff like pieces of banana.

-Alaina loves to play peek-a-boo and it’s so gosh darn cute!

-The little stinker started pulling up on furniture last week.

-She’s added some more consonants to her vocabulary, including n’s; I’m hopeful that since it’s only one letter away, she’ll be saying m’s soon instead of replying to my prompts of “mama” with shaking her head and saying “dada”.

-We’ve been doing some sign language with her the past couple of months and we believe she did her first sign back to us- the sign for more when daddy was making her laugh. :)

I solemnly swear that I’m up to no good… June 24, 2011

A visit from Grandpa June 22, 2011

We were so lucky to have my dad visit us over Memorial Day weekend. It took a little while for Alaina to warm up to him and she had to really study him.

But then they had a great time together. She loved showing off all her tricks and Grandpa helped her develop her waving skills.

They had long conversations of “huh”-ing back and forth, and enjoyed some rousing games of peek-a-boo.

Thank you, Grandpa, for coming to visit us (and serving as our landscaping consultant while you were here!)- we love talking to you on Skype, but seeing you in person is way better!

Road trip! June 20, 2011

Alaina and I made a road trip to Chicago last month to visit the Casey’s and attend Elizabeth’s ice show (basically the ice skating equivalent of a dance recital). Frank had hoped to make the trip, but the baseball team’s winning streak and resulting trip to the postseason meant it was just a mother-daughter trip. The trip to Chicago went great- Alaina slept most of the time. Alaina loved all the attention and entertainment from her cousins.

Elizabeth and Connor liked to help feed her, bring her toys, and sing for her.

I loved all the good food and catching up with the Caseys. And I enjoyed being back in Chicago. It reminded me of all my favorite things about the city, but also why we moved. Elizabeth was great in the ice show- she’ll be trying out for the national team in no time.

We also got to go to a mini house group reunion! 3 of the married couples from our old church were able to get together that weekend. I got to introduce Alaina to these great men and women who are still so near and dear to our hearts. One of the other couples had their third child, Eliana, just a few weeks after Alaina was born so it was fun to see them play together and compare their tricks. (Oh my gosh- look at my kid’s belly!)

It was such a great weekend and a much-needed break from being at home with A every weekend while Frank traveled with baseball. Unfortunately, the ride home didn’t go so smoothly. I had to endure 2 hours of screaming/crying so while it was a great weekend, it will be a while before I take another trip with just the two of us!
