I read a number of good books last year and thought I’d pass along my suggestions since I always appreciate hearing book recommendations from others. My reading this year kind of fell into three areas: young adult books (why wasn’t the writing for these books this good when I was actually a young adult?!), true-life or almost-true-life stories meant to better myself via knowledge or awareness, and some light-hearted reads when my reading topics became too heavy. So here are my suggestions, in no particular order…

A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison

While this is a fictional book about child trafficking, I’m guessing it’s not far from the truth. Difficult at times to read, but well worth it. I still think about some of the issues this book brings to light.

The Fault in our Stars by John Green

Read with a box of a tissues!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

A fictional account of post-WWII life, told entirely through letters.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

A thought-provoking and controversial story about teenage suicide. The storyline took an odd turn at one point that angered me and made it unrealistic, but still worth reading.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler

It’s a great read for people around my age since this book allows you to reminisce about the 90’s and laugh at how ridiculous we’ve become with things like Facebook.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I strongly suggest listening to the audiobook for this since Tina Fey reads it herself.  It had me laughing out loud on my commute.
