We finished out October with our annual trip to the apple orchard with friends. Our family picture is a little different this year compared to last year’s! :)
Micah’s 12th month November 4, 2014
What a whirlwind of a first year!
Micah now weighs 20 pounds 10 ounces (38th percentile) and is 27.75 inches tall (4th percentile). (Sorry, Micah-I don’t have any tall genes to give you!) Tooth #7 arrived on the bottom this month. He’s made the switch from formula to whole milk, from pureed food to finger foods, and from bottles to sippy cups! Sometimes I miss those quiet moments of giving him a bottle, but am enjoying not having to constantly wash bottle parts!
This boy really likes to get into trouble- opening every door and drawer, pulling on cords, etc. He likes to open things that Alaina was never interested in, including trash cans and toilet lids.
I was never sure if there was a true gender difference in toy preference or if it was just due to what types of toys we offer girls versus boys, but this kid has a clear preference for all things ball-related! He loves to roll, throw and chase balls for long periods of time, especially with Alaina.
Micah really loves music and immediately starts “dancing”. He tries to say Alaina (“Nay-nuh”) and Mya (“May-mah”) and has started pointing when he wants you to carry him towards something in particular. Just like when he was an infant, he still really likes to be held.
On the evening before his birthday, as the last bday party guests were leaving, Micah finally took his first steps! Crawling is still his preferred mode of transportation since he’s so darn fast at it, but he’s getting better at walking- going further distances and standing on his own for longer durations.
Happy 1st Birthday, Micah! You have brought a lot of joy and laughter (and chasing!) into our lives during your first year. We can’t wait to see what the next year has in store.
Alaina’s 4-year Update November 3, 2014
This beautiful girl is now 4! She’s now 3 feet, 3.5 inches tall (43rd percentile), weighs 35.5 pounds (54th percentile) and is wearing mainly 4T or size 4 clothes.
Alaina loves to color and her drawing and coloring skills have really improved the past few months. Last year, she could count to 50 by herself; now, she can go past 100. She is working on learning how to write all the letters of the alphabet and knows most of it. The most amazing development is that she’s already learning how to read! She knows many sight words and is pretty good at sounding out words she doesn’t know. Our own knowledge is being put to the test as she often asks us how to spell words. I often find her reading through all of the board books in Micah’s room since there are only a few words per page. It still catches me off guard when we’ll be out running errands and she starts reading words on signs, etc.
This year, Alaina has also enjoyed learning new activities. In May and June, we took parent and child swimming lessons to help her become more comfortable in the water prior to our trip to the ocean. Earlier in the fall, she took a 5-week dance class, which introduced her to ballet and tap. She’s currently taking a gymnastics class, which was one of her birthday presents from us. It’s challenging finding experiences like this that work with our schedule (and our pocketbook!), but she really enjoys them.
Alaina loves to listen to music and dance around the house. She likes to watch a variety of shows- Super Why, Angelina Ballerina, Doc McStuffins, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Clifford the Big Red Dog, etc. She likes to help me out in the kitchen (our specialty is blueberry muffins) so we sometimes watch The Pioneer Woman or America’s Test Kitchen together.
She’s become much more opinionated about a wide variety of things, but her clothing is definitely one of them. She loves to wear skirts and dresses, and dislikes jeans.
The greatest blessing over the past year has been to watch Alaina leap in the role of big sister. She is truly the greatest big sister! From the moment Micah was born, she has been so caring and loving towards him and is always looking out for him- from bringing him toys to singing to him to stop his crying. She loves to make him laugh, usually through some form of physical comedy like falling down. She has a hard time waking up in the morning, but if I ask “do you want to help me wake up Micah?”, she’ll pop out of bed and rush to his room. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally heard her say to Micah “go away!” when she was trying to watch a video and he kept wanting to play with her. I hope they can continue to be best buds as they grow up!
One and done November 2, 2014
For Micah’s 1st birthday, we invited friends from church and work over for a bbq. (Disclaimer: we were busy hosting the party so hardly any pictures were taken!) There have been several babies born among our friends over the past few years so it’s always fun to see how big the kiddos are getting.
Micah enjoyed his first sweet treat- a vanilla cupcake with cream cheese frosting. He loved it so much, he tried to save some for later in his eyebrows and hair. We had to fit a quick bath into the party schedule!
Alaina helped Micah open gifts from family on his actual birthday.
We look forward to many pick-up games with his new basketball goal. Happy 1st Birthday, Micah!
Frozen in September October 30, 2014
Alaina celebrated her 4th birthday last month with a day full of festivities. We started the day with a special waffle breakfast and opening presents from family.
She really flipped out when she opened the last gift- an Elsa dress from Papa!
That afternoon, she had a Frozen-themed birthday party at a local park with 10 of her friends. First up was ice crystal painting.
Then they decorated snowflake sugar cookies.
After that sugar rush, Frank taught them how to play freeze tag.
Micah’s 11th month September 19, 2014
This 11-month old refuses to lay still for pictures- he kept either rolling over or hugging Hugsby so this is as good as its going to get! Here are some highlights from Micah’s 11th month…
Tooth #6 arrived this month so now he has 4 teeth on top and 2 on bottom.
He gets into everything!! His new nickname is Samson because he is ridiculously strong for a baby and likes to break things- he’s like a superhero who can’t control his powers yet. So far, he’s broken several door stops, the knob off of a cabinet, and the mobile off of the crib! He also enjoys emptying bookcases of their contents and dumping all of the Duplo blocks all over the living room.
But who can stay angry at this cute face??
Micah’s still cruising along the furniture and has stood on his own for a second or two. He can climb the entire flight of stairs, but doesn’t seem to care about the getting down part.
He’s doubled his sign language repertoire by learning the sign for “all done”. But his favorite thing is waving to people. He does it all day long and it has made him the most popular baby at daycare, church and the grocery store since no one can resist his cute little wave.
Just recently, he has started to snuggle with stuffed animals by laying on top of them and going “ahhh”. Alaina and I crack up everytime he does it!
His new favorite activity at home is pulling all of the pajamas out of Alaina’s dresser. He does it almost every night while Alaina gets ready for bed!
Over Labor Day weekend, the kids and I went up to Michigan for a long weekend while my dad was also visiting the Caseys. (Poor Frank was on a trip with the volleyball trip) It was a beautiful weekend so we spent a lot of time outside- playing on the swing set or at the park, going for jogs and walks, and enjoying almost every meal out on the deck.
Have you ever heard of Gaga Ball? Me neither until Elizabeth and Connor taught us how to play at this park that has a gaga pit.
The kids also enjoyed some quality time with Grandpa.
The big outing for the weekend was to an area dairy farm. It’s still a family-run operation, but you can see the cows get milked (which just reminded me of the state fair), walk around the barns and see the baby cows, pigs, rabbits, etc., and enjoy some ice cream made from their cows’ milk.
The best part was when Micah got licked by a cow while they were waiting to go into the milking barn! He thought it was hilarious! He was given the nickname “Micah Moo” several months ago back when our friend Angie was babysitting him and it has stuck so it seemed like the cows were accepting him into their tribe. :)
